Olympic Reflections:

Atlanta '96

Project update

This project is currently in post-production. Scheduled completion date is 11/15/96. Air date is not yet scheduled.

Program evolution

As I prepared for a trip to Atlanta to watch Olympic baseball, I was pleasantly surprised by my building excitement about attending the 100th anniversary games. I realized that my anticipation was not because of the athletic events, which were almost secondary in my mind, but by the anticipation of learning about the other stories, the stories of the spectators. I wanted to learn about the people who, like me, were attending the Olympics: who they were, where they were from, why they chose to come to Atlanta, what their thoughts about being there were, and what they guessed their memories might be years later.

I have chosen a simple narration-free format of person-on-the-street interviews, to be edited together with scenes from Atlanta in the throes of the largest event in the city's history. The only music used will be that which is performed by street musicians and captured on tape; no other sources will be incorporated in post-production. The production will be 100% Atlanta and 100% Olympics.

Community impact

Most people will never attend an Olympic games. But most people can see events and learn about the athletes through commercial media. My production will offer a different perspective: that of the Olympics outside the sports venues. This program will give the community a taste of the culturally, economically, and socially diverse group of people who will converge on Atlanta to make this a world gathering.
